It’s been a busy autumn. Not a good busy either. The sort of busy where One doesnt’t have time for anything important because One’s tax bill is gigantic and One needs to work hard and save up to pay it off. It’s a sad story… However, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Next year I will be presenting a new work by Studio Barking Dog. ‘Eel and Shellfish’. An emersive, existential musical/visual performance experience featuring animation by the wonderfully talented Gemma Green-Hope and a live score performed on solo acoutic guitar.

I am passionately attached to the piece. I fear for it’s well being out in the cold hard world. But the time has come to set it free, come what may…

First showing will be at ‘Unit 18 Presents!’ 2nd of February 2014. An evening of performance art in Hackney Wick.

This morning I was reading the news and discovered, to my delight, that a documentary was being released about my favorite comic strip ‘Calvin and Hobbes’.

Having then spent the day riding around on my bike and lounging in the sun (Hobbes would be proud.) I came home to discover that the makers of this documentary which I am looking forward to seeing have come across my work during their research and have included it on the website promoting the film!

I wrote a little tune a few years ago that I put on an album of little tunes and it just happened to be called ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ , It just had that sort of feeling about it.

If you haven’t come across the fabulous work of Bill Watterson yet then now is as good a time as any! Check out the website for the movie! (Starting on the music page where I have been humbly included!)

‘Uncuckoo’ was a series of scratch pieces by the performance art company ‘The Rainbow Collectors’ There were three incarnations of the piece which involved puppetry, physical theatre, live music and dance, performed at Battersea Arts Center, ICA and Camden Roundhouse.

The pieces were the result of intense workshopping. Borrowing heavily from the Butoh dance discipline, the workshops involved exercises in forgetting one’s physical habits and attributes.

Each version of the piece took a different approach to it’s development and highlighted the collective nature of the company with different artists and performers working with the group at different times.

The soundtracks I composed for the performances also varied considerably. The first piece was performed solo on electric guitar and am radio. The second featured a custom built bowed cello like intstrument and percusive gongs built from scrap metal along with a violin accompanyment. The third and final piece was a huge change of direction. Adopting a slapstick, pythonesque comedy aesthetic, the soundtrack was entirely built of samples and sound effects that were triggered from the sound desk.

This recording is a studio version of the first incarnation’s soundtrack that was performed live at Battersea Arts Centre in 2011
